Midnight sun or northern lights, open highlands or blue ice caves: how to choose your season.
It is the first question almost everyone asks us, and the honest answer is that Iceland has two great seasons that feel like two different countries. Neither is better. They are simply extraordinary in different ways.
Summer: the light that never leaves
From June to August the sun barely sets. Around the solstice Reykjavík has around 21 hours of daylight, and in the far north the sun dips only briefly below the horizon before rising again. The light is soft and golden for hours at a time, which photographers love and which makes long evenings in the Westfjords or the north feel endless.
Summer is also when the highlands open. The interior's mountain roads usually open from late June to early September, and with them Landmannalaugar's rhyolite mountains, the lava deserts and the river crossings that only a super-jeep can make. If the empty heart of Iceland is what draws you, summer is the only answer.
- Midnight sun and long golden evenings
- The highland interior by super-jeep
- Puffins on the sea cliffs, roughly May to August
- Whales in the northern bays
Winter: the season of the sky
From October to March the nights are long, and that is the point. On clear, dark nights the aurora can appear anywhere on the island. Short days are lit by low, honeyed light, the south coast is often under snow, and the glaciers reveal their blue ice caves, typically from November to March and only ever with certified guides.
- The northern lights, from roughly September to April
- Blue ice caves inside the glaciers
- A quieter island, steaming geothermal pools in the snow
Summer gives you the land. Winter gives you the sky.
And the in-between months?
May and September are quietly wonderful: fewer people, longer days than winter, sometimes an early aurora in September. Your specialist will tell you honestly what each month can and cannot offer.
